PSSA Testing Information

PSSA Testing

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) has communicated to school districts that the U.S. Department of Education is requiring all public schools to administer state assessments. Therefore, in accordance with Federal and State requirements the Rose Tree Media School District will be administering the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) this Spring.  As in years past, students in grade 3-8 will be assessed in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science.  The dates of the assessment are as follows:

The Rose Tree Media School District will continue to implement all of the safety protocols and administer the assessments in accordance with PDE guidelines.  Therefore, all students must be in-person when taking the assessments.  There is no virtual administration option available for students.  For those families who have elected to keep their children in the fully virtual schooling environment, space in the building will be made available for in-person testing sessions.  Your school principal will be providing specific information regarding testing days, times, and building locations for these students.

In order to comply with PDE protocols,  all students are expected to complete the PSSA exam. PDE recognizes a religious objection to test content as the only legal opt-out option for PSSAs. This process requires parents/guardians to review the test materials and then submit in writing that they have a religious objection to the content. The state also allows a district to recognize that parents have the right to refuse participation in the PSSAs. This is known as a parental refusal and does not require the review of the testing materials.

Parents/Guardians who wish to opt their child out of testing for religious reasons, must contact Linda Gallagher at lgallagher@rtmsd.org or (610) 627-6124, no later than April 27, 2021 to schedule an appointment to review the testing materials and sign a confidentiality agreement.

Parents/Guardians who intend to refuse testing should contact their child’s school principal in writing (via email) no later than April 23, 2021.

The Rose Tree Media School District uses the PSSA results as one of several data sources to inform instruction and educational programming.  Curriculum-based assessments and normative assessments, such as the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP), are routinely used to provide information regarding curriculum implementation, instruction, and student achievement.

Thank you in advance for your continued support and cooperation.

Sincerely,

William M. Dougherty
Assistant Superintendent
